Application of Optical Heart Rate Monitoring

چکیده
Since the introduction of portable devices in 1957 by Dr. Norman Holter, heart rate (HR) monitors have been extensively used in clinical practices as a diagnostic and prognostic tool, mainly for cardiovascular diseases. In parallel, the use of HR monitoring devices by sport physiologists to analyze the response of the body to exercise or training stress and to evaluate the training level of athletes has gained popularity. With the increasing interest of consumers to health and wellness monitoring, an explosion of commercialized HR monitors based on various technologies has been observed during the last decade. This chapter will give an overview of the different techniques actually known to monitor HR, focusing in particular on the so-called photoplethysmographic (PPG) technique. The history of the PPG technique, its basics, including measurement principles, measurement sites, quality factors and its applications to sport, fitness, daily life, and healthcare, will be addressed in respective sections. The heart is the muscle in charge of pumping the blood throughout the blood vessels, namely the arteries and the veins carrying oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, respectively. The regulation of the rate at which the heart is pumping is mainly controlled by the autonomic nervous system. This system comprises sympathetic and parasympathetic (or vagal) functions, which are partially complementary. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for increasing HR, constricting blood vessels, and other “stress” responses, while the parasympathetic system promotes maintenance of the body at rest (e.g., slowing

Design and Application of a Photoacoustic Sensor for Monitoring the Laser Generated Stress Waves in Optical Fiber
Measurement of stress transients generated by a 400ns pulsed HF laser in an infrared fluoride glass fiber has been made using fast time – response piezoelectric film transducer. Acoustic signals up to 12 mV with frequencies ranging in megahertz generated by 21 mJ laser pulse when passed through the fiber axis in the linear region. It is shown that useful information such as onset of non - linea...

Photoplethysmography imaging (PPGI) and infrared thermography imaging (IRTI) are contactless camera-based measurement methods for monitoring a wide range of basic vital parameters. In particular, PPGI enhances the classical contact-based photoplethysmography. Approved evaluation algorithms of the well-established PPG method can easily be adapted for detection of heart rate, heart rate variabili...
متن کاملUsing photoplethysmography in heart rate monitoring of patients with epilepsy.
Heart rate is a useful neurophysiological sign when monitoring seizures in patients with epilepsy. In an ambulatory setting, heart rate is measured with ECG involving electrodes on the skin. This method is uncomfortable which is burdensome for patients and is sensitive to motion artifacts, which decrease the usability of measurements. In this study, green light photoplethysmography, an optical ...

Background: A pressure ulcer is a complication related to the need for the care and treatment of primarily disabled and elderly people. With the decrease of the blood flow caused by the pressure loaded, ulcers are formed and the tissue will be wasted with the passage of time. Objective the aim of this study was to construct blood flow monitoring system on the heel tissue which was under external...
